Christmas, New Year and New Life

I have nothing of particular interest to comment to the blog this week. I have simply been very busy, moving, getting ready for Christmas and my birthday, reorganizing my life in some ways and meeting new people (thanks to my very generous big sister and brother in law). It will definitely take some time to adjust to my new life up in Northern California. There are many things that I may have to change about how I have gone about living my life of late and perhaps that not such a bad thing. Many of them were not exactly benefiting my in anyway.

As we approach the New Year I think that some time spent reflecting upon how I have been behaving and moving through my life to this point is, maybe not necessary but probably a good idea. This is not to say that I have been a bad person or anything to that effect. It is simply to say that there could be a better way of looking at it. In any event I shall write more about it when I have come to some firm conclusions, since for the time being I have no real insight into this.

I would just like to say a very special thank you to my two best guys in my new/old home ;0) for coming out to San Francisco for my birthday. Thanks guys I know that you didn't have to but it would not have been the same without you! I would also like to say thank you to my big sister who has just been an angel. Thank you for sharing your friends with me, since I really don't have any that live really close! I am really glad to get to know them and to be able to spend more time with you. I know we haven't always got a long but I think now that we are older and understand each other a little better we have gotten past that and for that I am very grateful and very happy. There is no one like family and so you are extra special to me.

To everyone else I hope that you have all had a very happy Christmas and are planning great things for New Years Eve and the New year!

Temple of Forgiveness

Below is a short story that was sent to be by my aunt. It got me thinking about somethings and prompted me to write the following.

It is one of the hardest things to do in life, which is probably why we do it so rarely and avoid it whenever possible. It is much easier to retain the anger or grief than it is to let it go. Forgiving someone for wronging you or for being part of something that no one could control is a very difficult task. It takes more courage and bravery than pretty much anything else that any of us will ever do. On top of that it is one of the numerous things that we all have the off chance of being part of at some point. But why is it so challenging for us to forgive? I can not say that I rightly know the answer to that question or that there is even an answer for it. But it is worth thinking about.

In all truth forgiveness is probably one of the best gifts that you could ever give to any person. In fact forgiveness can even be used as a weapon against further injury. For example if someone robs your house and you find out who it was and you walk up to them, look them in the eye and with your whole heart behind the statement say "I forgive you," you maybe surprised by the outcome. It might just have more of a positive effect on their life than you ever even imagined.

I am sure that at one time or another someone has forgiven you for something that you had done to them. The release of emotions that comes with being forgiven for something that you believe or know that you should not receive such an act of kindness for is earth shattering. But being forgiven by someone else is merely an act of kindness, the key is to be able to forgive yourself. This, at least in my opinion, is even harder than forgiving someone else. One reason may be because you in your heart still feel that you should not be forgiven that you must pay some higher price but honestly that is not for you to decide. Letting go of the feeling that you should not be forgiven is not easy and I am not sure that there is any person in the world who could tell another how it can be achieved. It is simply one of those things that you must figure out how to do for yourself. Perhaps another reason why forgiving yourself is so tremendously hard is because you are afraid that even if you forgive yourself that the other party may not be so generous.

In any case forgiveness is beautiful and heart warming act, as long as it is true, genuine and without motive. To do such a selfless thing without reservation, without the idea of gaining anything for it, just for the pure and humble belief that by doing so you will make someone else's life a little bit better (and possibly your own as well) is a true gift of the heart. The person receiving such a gift will probably never forget what you have given them.

So since Christmas is near and the holiday season is a time for good will towards men (as is so often quoted in those cheery holiday songs we all dearly love) if for no other reason than it is Christmas, try forgiving someone if you have someone whom you need to forgive. You maybe surprised at how much better you feel about yourself and your life.

And now the story that prompted all of this:
True story. When we lived near Oceana Naval Air Station, we considered jet noise the sound of freedom. Just two days ago here in San Diego, an F-18 Hornet lost its engine after takeoff from the carrier. Unable to land back on the ship with only one engine, the pilot tried to make it to the tarmac at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Just blocks from the runway, the pilot lost his second engine. He tried desperately to make it to open space beyond the neighborhood (which, by the way, was seriously encroaching on the runway), stayed with his bird until the last possible second, ejected, and the jet landed up in a residential street and slid into a house, setting it on fire. Inside the house was a young mother, her mother, and her two children (2 and 15 months of age) - none survived the impact and the fire that immediately engulfed the home. The devastated father/husband/son-in-law gave a press conference yesterday, where he said, among other gracious and thoughtful things, that he forgave the pilot, saying that he knew he did everything he could to get the jet to safety, and that, as a member of the military, the pilot was a treasure to our nation. The man is a recent KOREAN IMMIGRANT. I don't forward this to make any political statement on the present or future administration, or the wisdom (or lack thereof) of our involvement in Iraq. This story and the one below simply speak to the true patriotism of those who love this country and appreciate those who died in service of it.

English for the insane!

My Aunt sent this on to me and I thought that it was entertaining and too true at the same time. Take the time and read it, whoever wrote this makes some great points .

You think English is easy???
Read to the end . . . a new twist
1) The bandage was wound around the wound.
2) The farm was used to produce produce .
3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
4) We must polish the Polish furniture.
5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.
6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.
7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present
8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.
9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.
10) I did not object to the object.
11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.
12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row ..
13) They were too close to the door to close it.
14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.
15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.
16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.
18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.
19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?
Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?
If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.
PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'quick' ?
You lovers of the English language might enjoy this .
There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP.'
It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report ?
We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special. And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.
We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP ! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP . When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP...
When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP.
When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.
One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so........it is time to shut UP!
Oh . . . one more thing:
What is the first thing you do in the morning & the last thing you do at night? U-P

What Does That Say???

Sorry about the spacing on that last blog. I don't know whats wrong with the program but I did try to edit it, add in more spaces between the paragraphs it just has decided not to show up. If its unreadable I will take it down and re-post it at a later time. Let me know.

Holiday Halabaloo

As the Christmas season approaches and your stress levels soars from trying to find that perfect gift or identify the ultimate Christmas tree that will make you the envy of the neighborhood decoration competition for the fifth year in a row, here are some things to keep in mind and perhaps to help lower your blood pressure.

No matter what your kids or family say, even if you make them a home made gift instead of a store bought one, they will love you. Chances are, in fact that they will appreciate the effort and thought that was put into the self made marvel that they will cherish it more than that high powered digital i-gizmo that they will loose, break or forget about a month after receiving.
As an aside, I love the holidays. I adore everything about them the lights and the cold air (if you are anywhere above Los Angeles), the smell of a freshly decorated Christmas tree and hot apple cider heating on the kitchen stove. I love the cheerful music (which is rare because I usually enjoy more melancholy tones from my musical selection) and the feeling you get around the Christmas season. Similar to Thanksgiving there are so many things to be thankful for. The fact that you can buy someone a present if you wish to or for the more adventurous or slightly more talented, the ability to make a Christmas gift. be thankful for being able to be near your family, or if you can not that you can pick up a telephone and give them a call, tell them that you love them. The fact that you can build a fire and heat your house, without you electricity bill going any higher than it already will be since your whole house is lite up like the Olympic beacon to name just a few.
Just after Thanksgiving I was contemplating the idea of the Christmas/holiday/Hanuka/Kwanzaa/whatever season and came to the realization that we all take this beautiful festival for granted. We are so consumed in what to get everyone and whether or not they will like what we pick, if we got the best price and whether someone was already going to get that gift for them, that we forget why we even bother in the first place. The furry of the holiday shopping scene and the anxiety that occurs when the store has run out of the high definition large screen jumbo-tron television set that you had been planning on buying that special someone for the last 3 months, is in my mind what really ruins the festivities. I will say again the truth is that if they person really love you, and if they are your family they do (if not that is another issue entirely and I have some special advice for that as well), then they honestly wouldn't care if you got them a pantomime pony or a Polaroid picture, an iPhone or an iLoveyou (I - Love - you just the words for those of you who didn't quite get that one). So when you stress level begin to raise as you shop for your loved ones, remember that it really is the thought that counts and if you have kids, they wont remember next year or even a few months from now what you bought or did not buy them for Christmas. In fact, and possibly most especially since this year has been difficult financially for a lot of families, try softening the blow for the little ones early by telling them that "Santa" had so many new children to send presents to this year that he might not be able to get them everything that they want for Christmas (or if you don't celebrate Christmas an equally fitting statement would do just fine). For the older kids, tweens and teens just explain that it might be or is going to be a meager Christmas as far as presents go. They will understand. If perchance you need consoling because you have just realized that you can not buy yourself or your significant other that lovely shiny something you found in the store months ago, tell your self this, that the day after Christmas it will be at least 20 times less expensive and/or that if you still want it 6 months from now then you will buy it then; that gives you another 6 months to save up for it and if you really want it you will scrimp and save so that you can buy it.
You may ask what I am doing this Christmas or perhaps saying if I am such a big advocate of producing homemade goods why don't I set the example? My answer to you is, I am being the example, I am making homemade gifts for all my loving family. However, because I love to buy Christmas presents for people as well, I am also buying everyone something small to go with their gifts so that I have covered both ends, there by making my Christmas especially non-stressful and taking the time to enjoy the Christmas season.
So as we get closer each day to the season of giving, forgiving, groveling, singing, loving, embracing, caroling, and general merriment having remember to enjoy yourself and enjoy those around you and those you love.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanuka, Merry Kwanzaa, Happy holidays, Happy Christmas, Bonne Noel, Weihnachtstag, and for those of you who do not celebrate any of these or whom I have not listed you winter holiday Merry December Nights!

Open Up Her Mind And Then....

Just as a note, I am sorry that the last post was so extraordinarily long. In my defense I had been contemplating that one for awhile and I haven't written anything recently, so if you need an explanation "so, OK... there you go" (Gus, My Big Fat Greek Wedding). :0)

The Only Remedy Is To Dream...

It is interesting to me how little our education prepares us for the real world. When you start school its all about learning to read and write, to count and do simple mathematics, to color and make friends. Then you get a bit older and you start, "your proper education." What they mean to say is now you get to learn about a bunch of things that once you graduate from high school you will probably never use again except to liven up conversation at fancy cocktail parties. You learn about history, being bias the way I am I like to think that this is a furiously important subject but in the grand scheme of the job world its probably not, though it does explain a lot about politics and why the world works in the way that it does today. Then you have subjects like geometry, trigonometry, economics, chemistry, biology, P.E. so that the schools can feel like they are doing something about the fact that so many people these days are morbidly obese though they only make you take it for 2 years, which in my opinion completely defeats the point. These subjects are all very important but again once you are leave high school you will probably never use them again.

Now, I know what some of you might be thinking at this time, I use that everyday or economics is vital to understanding the stock market and the way that our country's financial system works. You are completely correct but unfortunately the average person does not think about these things until they are directly affected by them, which is seldom. I am also not saying, by any means that I know better than someone else how our students should be taught or what are the things are that we should be teaching them. In fact this is, in a some what clouded way, my point. How do we know what courses the children/ young adults of this country should be following? Why is it not ok for some students, as young as 12, to want to be artists or musicians? If that is what they are passionate about and that is where they are truly gifted in, then who are we, who are the adults, who are the politicians and the unions to say that this is not ok; that they should be focusing on more usable trades or modes of study?

I believe that this is one of our main problems as a society and for that matter what is wrong with most of the major countries in the world. We are all so focused on what career path for ourselves and our children will make the most money, will allow them and us to have the highest status in society. Where this is a notable and very normal thing for parents to want for their children and for us to desire for our ourselves it totally disregards their wants and desires. Not only this but once we have indicated to them what they "should" want to do as a career, doctor, lawyer, CEO, etc. then we send them to college where they are able to expand their knowledge base and continue their educations in a glorified high school setting. It really is like high school without the parents and that you can actually get kicked out of if you don't do well in your courses, though unfortunately most college age kids don't care about that.

Once they have finished their college education, now between 21 and 23 years of age, sometimes older sometimes younger, we tell them that they are required to know exactly what they want to do as a career, 9-5, Monday through Friday for the next 30 years. Every recent graduates most hated question, "so what are you going to do with your life?"

Explain where the logic is in that? How many people do you think there are who know or knew what they wanted to do at 22? Not many, but yet this is how it is once you get out of college. "They," the wonderful disembodied "they" tell you to "get a job" or if you want to continue your educations, as some people mistakenly assume is because you don't know what you would like to do with the rest of your life just yet, you can go to graduate school. The problem is that deciding what you want to do in graduate school is a lot like deciding what you want to do with your life for the next 30+ years, and perhaps even harder. I say this because the beauty is if you get a job you don't like you can always quite and go find another one and yes it takes time but there really is no negative impact to you. Unfortunately, if you are in a graduate program you don't like you can quite, but if you do then you just wasted in the neighborhood of 20 to 40 thousand dollars.

Applying to graduate school you have to know A: what area you want to get your degree in. specifically, take psychology for example. If you were to apply for a master's in psychology you would need to know, what type of psychology you wanted to practice, clinical, child, abnormal, neurological, marital psychology. B: you would then need to know who are the authorities on that type of psychology and what their research background is in, where they studied and if their knowledge will be an asset to your educational development. Then it gets even more difficult. As if trying to decided what type of psychology of all the types their are, you wished to continue learning about you must now decide what area of that branch of psychology you wished to study. This is where I get tied up, not knowing enough about psychology I must change my analogy to something that I do know more about so please bare with me as I try to clear this up for you. We are switching our example to history. So now lets give our victim a name, "Vivian."

So now Vivian has decided that she wants to study history as a grad student, that she would like to continue to learn about Chinese history, which is just great for Vivian but now she must decide what time period in Chinese history she wished to focus on for what will become her master's thesis on the subject. Ok so Vivian, is extra special and she knows that she wants to write her thesis on something to do with the Tang dynasty. Now she must find out where the best professors are who study The Tang Dynasty of China. Eventually she finds them, great! Now she has another decision she has to make, what about the Tang dynasty does she want to study? Does she want to study about their burial practices and how those differ from the burial practices of the Xia Dynasty, or from burial practices in Japan or Mongolia during parallel time periods? Maybe she wants to write about the political turmoils during the Tang dynasty or the relationship of the emperor and the heads of the religious orders, or political relations between the Tang Dynasty and its surrounding countries? Or perhaps the size and power or the Tang dynasty gained or lost during the its dominance.

And too all these things that Vivian must decide before even applying to graduate school, she must also find out where the professors are who have interests similar to hers, which makes the number of graduate schools to choose from very limited, indeed.

So in many ways deciding what you want to do in graduate school is a lot more difficult then going out and getting a job or career path that you have the ability to change if you wish to. And many of you at 21 or 23 could not have answered all, if any of these questions? I know people who are in their 50's and 60's who, after 30 years, still couldn't answer these questions that an aspiring graduate school is asked to decided in a matter of months.

Coming back to the point of this whole mess of writing is, how does our education prepare us for such decisions? How can someone so young be expected to know for certain the answer to questions that take a life time to discover? I guess what I am trying to say is that perhaps what we should be doing in school is discovering what our strengths are, not being forced to learn things that are of little or no use to us just because they happen to someones idea of what we should be good at or what we should know.

If you are good at art, no matter what kind and you enjoy doing it, pursue that dream. If you are a gift musician do not let anyone tell you that you will never make anything of yourself by going to school to learn about music. You will never be truly happy in your career unless you are doing what you love to do. My grandmother love to fly airplanes. She told me that when she was younger she would spend all her time down at the jet way just hanging out with the guys and trying to find a way to learn how to fly one. When WWII hit the US, she signed up to fly planes as part of the WASP, the Women Air force Service Pilots, who would tow targets at the back of their planes for the boys to practice shoot at, among other things. After that she became a flight instructor and taught Navy boys how to fly planes. When she retired she raced air planes with some of her friends. She traveled and saw the world. If she were alive today and you asked her she would tell you that she loved flying more than anything and that she may not have made a ton of money but she was always happy when she was in a plane, and that is the only thing that matters. Sometimes, if we just allow our hearts to guide us and stop using our heads to rationalize away our dreams, something far more beautiful comes out of it. It can turn an ordinary life into a master piece without you even knowing it has happened. Sometimes fighting for what you truly want and love to do is worth the pain that it takes to get you there, because the place you end up in exceeds any expectation that you could have ever had of it.

It's Not the End of the World

Disappointment is a funny thing. It can happen in more forms than you have the time to count and occurs in ways that we could not even dream of. I used to think that the way to avoid disappointment was just not to have expectations of people or of events. But like so many things it was a good theory that never worked in practicality. It is normal to have expectations and it is then, therefore normal to be disappointed when things do not turn out the way that you thought they would or people make decisions that you do not agree with. This is life. You cannot stop it, nor should you want to.

Many people, myself included at times, wish to make the world stop turning. They desire to turn back the clock and change the outcome of the place that they are in. But if you change where you are today then you change who you are today. Even if you do not always like who you are, desiring to be someone else would not solve your problems, for that you must look inward. It is your choices, the decisions that you have made as a person that have brought you to the point that you are at. Instead you should look at those things and gain from the experience as to why they occurred and what you learned from the whole thing.

Most disappointment in life comes for an outside source. How much does this disappointment really affect you and who you are? Perhaps you didn't get that job that you wanted or got laid off or didn't get into the school of your choice or perhaps someone you know let you down. All these things do not and at the same time do affect us. They affect us because we had expectations for these things. We had expectations that the world would get better if we got that job or that we could run away if we got into that school or that the reason that we had expectations of that person was because we had similar expectations of ourselves, but none of these things are permanent or by any means unchangeable. At the same time the job that you didn't get was just a job there are others, maybe even better ones to be had; the school may not have been all that you thought that it would be and running away never solved anything you must face up to those things that you wish to run away from if they are ever to desist. At the same time that person who let you down is only human, their failures are constructed by you because perhaps you desired them to be something or someone that they had never been to begin with, and this, to tell the truth, is a very unfair thing to do. I do not discount myself from being part of this in anyway. i have mean times been disappointed by the actions of others but it was I who was to blame. Not because was in any way responsible but because I created an image of them that was not who they really were. I saw only the person that I wanted to see and there is were we fail on our part, by missing out on the beauty of their individuality.

The point to all this is that, as far as I can see it, the purpose in life should be to dismiss your disappointments. If things didn't go the way you thought, rather than them being all wrong, perhaps you were just thinking of them in the right way. Live life without regrets. Just remember that you made the decisions, you made those choices, and if things don't go your way its probably because there is something better out there for you. It does not do to dwell on what might have been. If you pay attention you will see that the way things are is a pretty good alternative. Be your own voice of reason and remember nothing and no one is perfect so don't get hung up on the small things, they are only temporary at best.

Quiet in a Busy World

Sometimes the best things in life are the quiet moments, like late at night when the world seems to be sleeping and the sounds of the world are lessened, you can almost hear the sounds of the world turn. Put on some soft music and embrace the effortless quiet, the calm of that time.
The lights at night, so soft, so beautiful, like stars that have fallen from the sky landing so close to the ground. The quiet time allows us the room to think, the room for our minds to breath, like a run in the morning or the early hues of a light coming over the horizon as we wake up and take in the smell of a new day we can clear away all those things that clutter our thoughts.
Sometimes after a particularly busy day or stressful time the best remedy is to turn out the lights, close all the doors, find a comfortable chair and absorb the moments of peace that you have carved out for yourself. These times are my favorite, these are the times that I wish I could fold up and stick in my pocket, carry them around the rest of the day. But instead you just have to soak them in and remember that though they are far to few they, and too spread out over the course of your day, month or year, they are the part and the hope of which makes waking up in the morning worth the trouble.
If your normal day has time enough for you to stop and sit, take a cup of tea or a mug of coffee and just engross yourself in the silence of time, then you should count yourself amoung the very luck.

P.S.
Happy Veterans day and thank you to all who have served our country. You truly are a wonderful asset to us all and even when we don't remember to tell you, it means the world to us that you have sacrificed so much to keep us safe.

The Holiday's Are Coming

I don't have anything really interesting to talk about today, or any profound comments to make. I would simply like to say thank you to everyone who has been reading and sending e-mails. I really enjoy the comments that I have received from you. It is a gift to me when you send them, because it makes me want to continue to write.

I hope that you all are enjoying the new feature on my blog, the Pandora play list. If there is any particular type of music that you would like me to play, just let me know. For now I think the jazzy, 40's stuff has a nice ease about it that lends just the right feel to the page.

My thought for the day: As Thanksgiving grows ever closer I hope that everyone is beginning to get into the Holiday spirit. I believe that this year is going to be a particularly difficult season, for more reason than one. I would just like to start it off right by saying that those who truly love you, your family and your friends, will not mind if you can not get or give them everything that they want this year. Having you with them is a gift in itself and they will love you the more for it. We all should be thankful for what we have and keeping that in mind remember that sometimes giving to those who do not have as much as you is a far better use of your time and money than giving things to those who already have everything. You could even make it a family event out of helping the less fortunate, since family is what the season is all about anyway. It is just something to think about at least. I for one am going to be donating Christmas presents to children in need and am thinking about volunteering at a soup kitchen during the Christmas season. America my home, America my own

Welcome to a new world. Despite whom you voted for in the election whether it was Obama or McCain, the world around you has changed. And it changed but it was not last night or this morning, it was not because one side won and the other failed to make the cut. The world changed long ago and we just didn't take the time to notice.
You see the world has been a different place for as long as I can remember and it’s not because someone got elected and someone else didn't. It had nothing to do with a political race, although I think that there are many who would heartily disagree with me but it happened when the media found that it had power.
It seems that power corrupts all. People get a little of it and then, at least for the most part, go stark raving mad, drunk with their new found sphere of influence. When the media decided that it had power, it choose to use it to fight against the establishment. It found that it could tell the people what to do, how to act, how to think and found that they could easily sway the public to believe exactly what they wanted them to. If someone wanted power, they had to convince the media that they would increase the power that the media already had.
With the ability to influence the great and diverse amount of people that live in the country the media now had control. The masses, though as individuals are a very intelligent group of people, when together they turn into a crazy mob that ransacks an area, metaphorically speaking of course, because, at the time "it seemed like a good idea" or they "got caught up in the moment." The problem lay in the fact that people like to feel that they are a part of something that otherwise would be untouchable. They like to feel like they have power, the power to change things, anything if they really want to. Young people, generally in their early to mid 20's are particularly susceptible to this type of thinking. They are new to the game and so still are unchanged by the cruel reality that most likely will settle in about 10 years. They are so desperate to be a part of something, any cause, they disregard reason and jump head first into action without thinking about the true consequences of their actions, without really understanding the implications of what will happen if what they are fighting for occurs. The media and politicians know this and feed on it; simply they use them for it.
Then when the thing goes through, when they win, or lose and they see a change being made but not in the way they thought, they see what that cause was really made of, they see its true colors, they are aghast at the result. "How could they do that?" they say, "That's not what they promised!" Horror. But for those who listened, think for themselves and take the time to really understand how and what those with the power were asking us to do, were asking us to give up, it is not horror that you see in our eyes. Oh no, it is simply the inadmissible, unignorable, and yet total disappointment that we were proved right. Even though we had hoped, against hope that by some miracle we would be proved wrong.
Therefore, take care my friends and remember that whether your candidate won or lost, only the future, the future that is now, will truly be able to tell whether those who make promises to us as citizen are equally capable of acting upon them. As a side note, little ever is done that is not done with out great trial and tribulation in its wake. In order to prosper we must first suffer. If this be the time of suffering, take comfort in the fact that it is only for a while, long or short. Always fight for what you believe in and as a country we should to remember to fight for those things that separate us from the flock, Freedom and Capitalism, for now and always.

"Our country 'tis of thee," translation: It's your Country

You know it's interesting how life changes; sometimes you are up and sometimes you are down. That old saying "where there is a will, there is a way" doesn't always apply, even though we wish it would. Sometimes the reason why you can't see the forest for the trees is because you are just missing some of the little things, not necessarily because you are using the wrong lenses.

I am not sure that we all have our equal share of good times and bad, some people sure seem to have the bad times in spades and the good times so spread out that you can hardly even remember when they happened at all. My life has been easy, in comparison to most peoples, and I am ever thankful for that, though I must admit sometimes I wish it hadn't been because then I wouldn't feel as though I was being selfish when I complained about my problems that in the greater scheme of things are trivial.

We are starting in on the hard time, which in the near future will make all of our lives a little or a lot more difficult than we would like. I guess the only real consolation is to try our hardest to remember the important things in life, like that we have each other, we have our families, we have some money, even if it is not much, and to remember that there are many people out there that, even in the best of times, struggle when we didn't. WE should be thankful for what we have been given and what we have earned. Life is far too short to be spent in distress of a temporary slump.

This is one of the greatest countries in the world and though at times we forget how wonderful and what great things we are able to achieve with the freedoms that were allowed us by those who came before us, we will always find our way back home. En lue of the the up coming election I think that it is important for this country to remember what it means to be a citizen of the United States; to take pride in the fact that we can go to the polls, cast a ballot to have our say in election of our government without fear of losing our jobs, or persecution for choosing the "wrong candidate." I think that during election times especially. this country gets in such an uproar with which side of the fence that one resides on that we forget that we are still family, we are still friends, we are still a people and we are still ONE nation, despite what the constant barrage of media coverage and campaigning politician would like us to believe.

So PLEASE, when you go to the polls on Tuesday to cast that all important voice of freedom, remember that no matter who you vote for, or who your wife, daughter, husband or friend votes for, that you still love them, they are still the same person as they were yesterday. And if they exercise the right to keep their vote secret, respect should be given to their choice for silence.

Happy Election week to all and Congratulation to all who are doing their civil duty and letting their opinion be known (whether silently, on the ballot paper or publicly announcing).

Workout

PLEASE, PLEASE go check this link out. I hope that you will find it as entertaining as I have. Enjoy!

this link isn't as fun, but let me tell you I haven't ever even heard of some of these countries. It took me a long time, nearly 20 minutes to put the map together and I was still missing Bahrain. Try your luck at it.

"But, most because they didn'g get invited to those sort of parties"

Questions for the faint hearted. Or perhaps questions not for the faint of heart. Yes, Yes the second one is the one that is the one that I really wanted to write, the first one well I don't know why it is still up there but I am not going to erase it so, it stays. Now, where were we....ah yes these tough questions. Here you are you wonderful and graciously patient personages. If your life is imperfect what are you missing out on? And how can you miss something that you never had?

That 'ought to keep you occupied until the next time that I find something interesting enough to display on my little notebook page. Write your answers, if you can find any (sometimes they hide in strange places like lunch boxes lol) to me in an e-mail if you want and the page wont let you leave a comment.
P.S. In case you were wondering the answer to Life, the Universe and everything, is...42.

"We're the Women Suffragettes"

So here I something to think about for the week, just to keep you on your toes and get the gears in your old brain box working at a reasonable pace: During the women's rights movement our ladies fought for the basic rights that were given to all men.Today we are able to do awesome things like vote, have nearly equal jobs and, though not a undesirable occupation, but we can do more than stay at home and raise children without it being something of a scandal. Here is my only concession to this whole awesome deal that our great great grandmothers fought for; when we gained all these other rights it seems that the men decided that in order for us to be truly equal, we "women folk" had to forgo the activity of being courted and be made to settle with what we have now, men who want us to pursue them, the death of chivalry. I am sorry if some of you do not agree, but I believe that we ladies dropped the ball on this one. Though truth to be told, it is but a small sacrifice in the greater scheme of things and I would not wish to give up any of the other freedoms that were gained from being "liberated." That being said, this equality in dating scene I could still do without.

On a lighter note and one less likely to be controversial, or perhaps it will be who knows, below is a collection of entertaining tequila commercials.

P.S. my grad school application process is coming closer to conclusion. I have begun lining up my references, which was quite the nerve racking experience. I got so nervous yesterday that I broke out in hives before my first meeting with a prof. I had them for about another hour....kind of embarrassing. How well all in the name of obtaining a master's degree.

All Hallows Eve....

Halloween is fast approaching and I still A: don't have a costume, B: Have no plans for the evening, C: don't have a pumpkin, D: Haven't bought any candy. The last is the most criminal offense in my view lol.

Here are some fun things to do to keep your mind off important stuff during the remaining time we have until the little kiddies go out and eat enough sweets they endup in sugar induced comas ;0)

and this, because its clever:

P.S. You know that Halloween always makes me think of Ikibad Crane and the Olsen Twins lol

just a simple reminder

"Nobody puts Baby in the corner"

Hurray!!!! Baby's back!!! so here's the dish. I took her into the dealership yesterday. She was there most of the day and then they called me and told me that they needed to replace the same part that they had replaced 2 months ago. So I told them that and they said "would you look at that you're right" and then they fixed it for me for FREE!!! WOOT. Then comes the sad part. I took the care home and then drove it two blocks to Erin's house. When got back in it to come home..it started doing the same thing that I had asked them to fix. So I though well maybe I should take it back in the morning. When I got up I wasn't planning on taking it in right away, cuz I was tired and wanted to be on time to the museum and stuff and things. I hooped in the car and wa la the check engine light came on, big, bright and yellow gleaming up at me. So i said "oh fine guess its back to the dealers with you little one." So I was an hour late to work after i dropped her off and then when I was getting ready to leave the museum and go home they called me. "It was a spark plug that regulates the part that we put in yesterday" they tell me and I say oh ok, cuz when you put in the same part that you replaced only a few months ago you wouldn't have first checked to see if it was something little like that? Genius i tell you. lol any ways she is all fixed, so they tell me and so I hope. and for now baby is fine I got her oil changed and they boys there washed my windows and vacuumed out the car (the dealers washed her for me so I now have a super clean car that I didn't have to pay them to clean which is awesome!) Other than that not much going on. I still need to schedule my GRE exam (second go at it) and finish my personal statements...eww so i have lots of stuff to do that I don't really wanna to but that I need to get done asap.

P.S. I am totally looking forward to Thanksgiving in New Mexico and moving home in Dec. but imma miss little miss E. (hi friend!)

"It's not just a car, it's my baby"

Me and my jeep have been through a lot together in the past...7 years, wow its been along time but you know I think that she is about done. She is having troubles and it makes me sad cuz I love that old beater car of mine. She isn't the prettiest car around, not the newest, or the fastest but she is mine. It is inevitable though at some point you have to just realize that it is just a machine and that like a person all its clogs and gizmos just wear out, usually sooner than you are ready for them to. I hope that she makes it through the next 11 months but some how I just think that she is on her last leg and going down quickly. My poor little Rieghles, the green machine... I have to take her into the shop on Monday and see what they tell me, hopefully it is all good news a quick, easy, inexpensive fix for my baby. I will let you all know how it goes.

P.S. you know what is even more depressing, I don't even have any pictures of her to put up....what a bad car mommy I am. It's terrible.

Americans...lazy....never ;0)

I know I already posted but check this out:

What happens when you leave your computer on and walk away:

And you thought PONG was boring lol:

"Your Cat Seriously Needs to be Confused..."

You know the funny thing about life is that it isn't always what you think that it should be. Sometimes its a lot harder, sometimes a lot easier and sometimes if you put in that added bit of effort for something or someone it really pays off. Sometimes I wonder whether if anything that we do here, on this earth really makes very much of a difference. If we are using our time as time well spent or if we are just blowing bubbles in the merry-go-round of existence waiting for it to all come to a n end without ever noticing that this is what we are doing. The problem with such methods of self and human examination, of course, is that there is never a conclusive answer so the whole thing, ultimately is a great waste of time that could have been better spend feeding your gold fish, if you happened to have any, or perhaps taking a walk on a lovely day rather than sitting inside working on that ever so important pasty complection and wondering what is all meant and where the time had run off to? Let's face it if time were a person by now it have got tired of waiting around for you to come to the conclusion that you were wasting you time and would have run off with your best friend Pat, or Doug, the ruggedly hansom borrista that works in the coffee shop at the end of your block. By the time that you had noticed any of this they would have been married with six children and you none the wiser, still thought that you and time could make it work. (wow talk about random, sorry folks there was a point but now I have forgotten it)

I suppose the point should be that perhaps we should all stop waiting around for things to happen to us and start making things happen. The difference, though subtle, could change our lives. For example, if i decided that instead of writing this blog I would spend the extra time each day going outside and saying "hello" to one person, maybe then I would start the ball rolling, do you know what I mean, kick start the wheels of destiny or something. Of course, the likelihood of me ever doing something as outgoing as saying "hi" to one person I didn't know everyday are pretty much nill so there goes that idea.

Perhaps it really all is pointless so we should not try to help people improve who they are let them fester in their little world of disorder and chaos and say hang it all pack for a rather lovely vacation to Lisbon. Or better yet we come to the simplest conclusion which is that the great mystery of life isn't really a mystery at all but just a practical joke that God was playing on the Devil and he hasn't quite got to the punch line yet. I am not sure why that is the simplest explanation but who really cares, right?

(Hope that you enjoyed tonight's little excursion in to the craziness that is my train of thought sometimes, but not always, lol take care and have a fantastic evening, whatever evening is, if it really exists at all ;0)

"So robe, kimono, there you go!"

So my sister saw/met Howard Stern, he guy that does the totally obscene radio talk show, while walking in NYC. Which pretty cool. Listed below are some fun things to watch if you have some time, just follow the links.

This is what happens when you let your computer be smarter than you.

Because it is funny and the bus part, if you have ever been to Rome, it very true.

and it goes without saying, well obviously not since I am say it but that's besides the point, that the last addition to this is not quite in staying with my non confrontational standing in previous messages but no one reads this blog anyways so it really doesn't matter too much I don't think, but to the point that it is all in good fun and no more cynical than some of the e-mails that people send out, so there you go.

When things get bad, be like the Irish

So if this economic issue doesn't blow over pretty soon, which I highly doubt it will in light of the current view of things, yours truly may not be making her all so anticipated trip to the UK this spring. Why you may ask? or not if you don't care.... well lets put it this way, I would rather go to graduate school than this vacation, not that either will really help me at this point seeing as getting a job in a few years rather than right now my be much harder. So in order to be able to pay for my graduate education I may just have to not go on my fabulously desired excursion, which by the way is a point that I will heart broken over for probably a very long time in fact I may be disappointed by it until I actually leave for grad school, depending on if and where I get in.

In other news my sister is off to New York for a few days but not for a vacation for work and if you read her blog you will understand why that is not such a totally awesome thing. I am still in SD where it has been ridiculously hot for the past couple of days and even though it rained on Monday it was still hotter than the top part of hell out there. So perhaps I should be more specific the next time that I wish of rain. I am also currently looking for a job, still :0) but am sure that I will find something eventually, and hopefully soon. I took today off from the museum to do just that and to finish up some things that I need to do for my grad school applications so that every thing is lined up and filled out so I can simply hit the submit button and then make sure that they know my references and transcripts are coming separately. Unfortunately for some schools, aka UCLA, I have a god awful amount of work left to do that I really need the help of the conservator I work under to finish, if she ever decides to come back from her honeymoon/vacation to India.

I hope that everyone has a completely fabulous Wednesday and that they do not get too stressed out about the economic issues of not only our country but most of the western world's.

"Hold your tongue, sir, or loose it"

So this weekend has been a bit of a lazy weekend. I did some rather productive work on the grad school front, editing my personal statement and seriously rearranging certain elements that were sub-par to say the least. It is better than it was, as it should be, but still is rather a wretched piece of work and will take much more revising, especially since I need three different versions. I think once I have the framework down then altering it in respects to the specific program will not be quite as difficult.

Since my last blog, members of my non-reading public have advised against me writing anything too serious in this publication. It has been suggested that I "not write anything that I would not wish to see published on the front page of the Wall Street Journal or New York Times." This I think is very good advice and since I have been known to make wild and obscene remarks about everything. I will try my very hardest to refrain from making any remarks, here forth, that will or would be objectionable to my person six or sixty years in the future. ;0) Although I would like to point out that I am not sure where the idea that I would ever say anything outrageous enough, important enough, to offend anyone or that I would be noteworthy enough to ever have anyone take note of me, came from but, I thank the suggesting party for their concern and conclude that I am pleased that they love me enough to be concerned for the me of the distant future. lol Now is anyone confused? I thought you might be ;0) The condensed version is that I should hold my tongue and not say anything of great consequence in the unlikely event that I am a media darling in the future and the press gets a hold of what I have written in this blog.

With that in mind I will say that I have watched this weeks political debates and am no closer to a decision, in fact I might be further from one. Moving right along, to the right of this screen you will see I have made a poll for you to vote which grad school you think that I should attend, in the event that I get into any of them. :) I am still waiting on comments from my previous question, see blog below, so I am not going to put up another one until at least one of you all decides to waste the time and reply lol. For now that is about all. If anyone knows of a good movie for me to rent, make suggestions. Since I have no cable I rent movies from Netflix and am always looking for new movies. I will put up a list of movies that I would suggest you check out in one of the tool bars to the right. Hope everyone had a great weekend, and I know its just sad that it is over.

P.S. E the Picture above is for you. lol I thought you would enjoy it.

Adams Country Avenue

Erin and I went to the Adam's Avenue Street Fair today, and of course I forgot the sunblock, nothing too surprising about that really but you think that I would have learnt by now. It was quite the interesting event to be truthful. I am no sure when I have seen so many, lets go with inventive, hairstyles and clothing selections. At one point I felt like I was stuck in the fifties with greasers all over the place with their slick hair and cuffed jeans and all stars. At other times I felt like we were a monster truck rally and then at a metal concert with the spike mohawks and silver appendages coming out of the surround audiences faces. I guess it just goes to show that San Diego has a very diverse populous.

E just started working at a local based coffee shop, which means that she is working quite a bit and her going to work reminds me that I really should be looking for a job and trying to pull in some cash while I am down here. I just don't know where I would want to work because anywhere that I might actually wanna get a job would be a full time gig and I, at least for now, still have an obligation to go the Museum three times a week. I guess that I could take Erin up on her advice and just apply at the same place that she is working at.

Here is a random question for all you to contemplate in any spare time that you might have:

What do you think killed chivalry? I have a quite extensive theory on that subject that I will write about some time after I hear some of your opinions. Right now I have some pressing engagements to attend to which is why I am going to hold off on that, in addition to not wanting to influence the opinions of those who might decided to comment. That is all for now hope that you all are no falling asleep reading this, if you are I am sorry and will attempt to be more entertaining in future postings.

oh goodness the randomness

Ok so this is really sad lol but you have to check out this video that i found on a website that I used to go to for entertainment all the time when I was a Freshmen in college.
http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/badgerphone
And yeah i know I should be doing other things, but hey whatev.

Life, the Universe, and Everything

So i am avoiding reading through mounds of grad school crap and writing my personal statement, which i should just do and get it over with already but apparently I like to drag out the agony of having to write it to the longest possible extent.....masochist i suppose. Anyhoo, does anyone know how to get sharpy off of skin....'cuz I made a mess of my hands at the museum today labeling boxes that are going into the freezer tomorrow and the crap just wont seem to come off. Not like I am going anywhere tonight so it doesn't really matter but I was going to go and line up my references for grad school tomorrow, even though I am not entirely sure which 5 I am going to apply to, I have three "for sures" and about 10 "maybes" but that is what I was going to sort out tonight, and make a calendar, and study for the GRE's, and, wow is it 5:30 already, cocktail hour please hold.........................................ah better to continue. I have a lot of stuff that I need to do I just don't really have the motivation. I know that I should but, I just feel like sleeping and waking up and having all this crap already finished and have a mini pile of grad school acceptance letters waiting for me in my mail box. Instead I have get AT&T bills and crap. Although I did get a really nice post card from Kristin, my sister if you didn't know that already, and her husband Aaron. It's about an ice cream shop, as if I needed the temptation. ;0)

I think that I am going to try to convince Erin that she wants to go hiking this weekend up in Poway, I have gas for it and other than that it doesn't cost anything. Hmmm.... that would give me Saturday or Sunday off from running since I totally skipped out this morning and slept in instead, I know bad kid right?

On a random note, since that is sort of what this blog is about, do you ever wonder what the meaning of life really is? Not the Monty Python crazy movie which is essentially some of the skits from their Flying Circus series put together, but the real meaning to life and everything that goes along with it?

I personally think that life really isn't about what everyone thinks it is. i don't believe that its just about living and dying or any of that crap. I think it's about chances and taking them when they come. it's about finding out what it takes and doing it regardless. It's about finding within yourself the strength that you always knew was there but people and circumstances made you forget; Or perhaps that is what I want my version of life to look like, because in truth I am the person whose life and circumstances and experiences have stolen all the components inside my being that would make me strong, bold and willing to take chances. All I am left with now is the desire to be all those things once again, and I am trying, desperately, but when battling oneself the wins are less often won quickly and more often take far longer and have many more failures than they should.
